NCAA Basketball or College basketball is one of the greatest sports in the USA. The season spans from November until the conclusion of the NCAA Final Four in April and has over 350 universities that participate in the Division I level. All or participating with the dream of being one of the 68 teams to make it to the NCAA Tournament, known throughout the world as “March Madness.” Filling out a March Madness bracket for this single elimination tournament is as American as apple pie, Fourth of July fireworks, and NASCAR.
Betting on College Basketball
College basketball teams typically play two to three times per week in their 27 game regular season, which is then followed by a conference tournament. Those good enough to win either their conference regular season championship and/or their conference tournaments will then automatically proceeds on to either the NCAA Tournament (conference tournament winners receive an automatic bid) or the NIT Tournament (regular season champions receive an automatic bid). The rest of the field is made up of at-large teams selected by a tournament selection committee.
Betting on college hoops is a huge industry. Sports books all over the world give odds on any and all college hoops action, as well as prop bets, futures and teasers.
How to Bet on College Basketball
There are normally two ways to bet on a NCAA college basketball game. One is to go against the spread, which means that one must consider the point spread when wagering on the game. If the underdog is +12.5 and a bettor wagers against them, then they must lose by 13 or more points in order for that wager to pay off. Conversely, if he takes the 12.5 points, then all they must do is stay within 12 points for him to win.
The other way to wager is the Moneyline. This means all the bettor must do is pick a winner regardless of the point spread. However, a favorite may be -200 which would mean to win $100 the bettor must risk $200. But if he takes the underdog at +150, a $100 wager would pay him $150.00.
Betting Trends
This past NCAA Tournament was a good place to take the points or even take the underdogs with the Moneyline. Top seeds continually fell as only the Florida Gators made the Final Four as a #1 seed and the Wisconsin Badgers were the only #2 seed to advance to North Texas. Both were dispatched in the semifinals by #7 seeded UConn Huskies and the #8 Kentucky Wildcats. UConn wound up beating UK in the championship game.
