FreeLeague One is the third tier of professional football in England and the second division of the English Football League. The 24-team league was previously known as the Football League Third Division but became the known as the Second Division when the First Division clubs broke away to form the Premier League in 1992. It was given its current name in 2004 when the tier above was re-branded as the Championship. The league is currently sponsored by betting company Skybet.
At the end of each season, the top two teams are automatically promoted to the Championship while the next four teams compete in a play-off for the third and final promotion place. The four clubs that finish bottom are all relegated to League Two.
