The DFB-Pokal or the DFB Cup as it is generally known is an annual German football tournament that is organized on the rules of a knockout tournament. There are a total of 64 teams that take part every year in this tournament with all teams from the Bundesliga and the 2.Bundesliga. This is one of the most important footballing trophies in German football history and is considered second only to the Bundesliga championship. This tournament is organized by the Deutscher Fusball Bund or the German Football Association as it is known in English. The normal runtime of the DFB Pokal is from August to the June and the winner qualifies for the DFL Supercup and also the Europa League unless the winner has already qualified for the Champions League from the Bundesliga.
A brief history of the tournament tells us that the DFB Pokal was formed in 1935 as the Tschammer-Pokal and was won by FC Nuremberg in the inaugural edition. A couple of years later, Schalke did the double or won both the trophies, the Tschammer-Pokal and the country’s top tier league trophy in 1937. But this was to be a one-off occurrence as there was no other team that won both trophies from 1935 to 1944 when the Cup was suspended due to World War II. The Tschammer-Pokal was then disbanded after the war when Nazi Germany faced their end. It was not until a good 7 years later, in 1952-53 when the Cup was started again but this time as the DFB-Pokal. It was won by Rot-Weiss Essen in the inaugural year.
The most number of trophies that have been won is by Bayern Munich, the German giants, a total of 17 cups. Also, special mention is accorded to Fortuna Dusseldorf who hold the record for most number of cup game wins in row when they 18 games consecutively between 978 and 1981. They managed to win the trophy in 1979 and 1980 as well, owing to the glorious run of wins.
German DFB Pokal format
The total number of teams that take part every year is 64. Out of this, all 36 teams of the Bundesliga and the 2.Bundesliga participate. Along with the 36, there are four teams from the 3.Bundesliga who get automatic qualification owing to the top four finish. Out of the remaining 24 places, 21 slots are reserved for the regional football associations and the winners of these footballing tournaments get to compete in the DFB-Pokal. The remaining three places are given to the regional associations that have the most number of men’s teams. In this way, fair representation is made so that everyone has an equal chance of competing in the Cup. One important rule that is followed is that reserve teams of a team already qualified are not allowed to play in the Cup.
The most successful team in the Cup’s history has been Bayern Munich and they have won it a total of 17 times. They won it the first time in 1957 and have been the winners in the last two editions as well, defeating VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund in the process. The next most successful club is Werder Bremen and they have held the trophy six times.
