FIFA World Cup 2018, scheduled to take place in Russia but the qualification process started in March 2015, which would continue until November 2017. 208 teams from FIFA member countries will be entering the qualification process. These 208 are from 6 confederations; CONCACAF(Confederation of North Central American and Caribbean Association Football)
CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation), UEFA(Union of European Football Associations), CAF(Confederation of African Football), AFC(Asian Footbal Confederation) and OFC(Oceania Football Confederation).
The 208 countries will compete until 31 teams are left to take part in the final tournament. And the hosts Russia, will automatically qualify for the final tournament, therefore making it 32 teams competing in total for the whole final tournament. From AFC, 4 or 5 teams will join the final tournament; 5 teams from CAF, 3 or 4 teams from CONCACAF, 4 or 5 teams from CONMEBOL, 1 team from OFC, 13 teams from UEFA and Russia (host) will be qualified for the final tournament.
The confederations will decide the format of the matches; League or Knock-out format.
AFC, with the 12 lowest ranked teams, was the first to begin the 2018 qualifications in Timore-Leste and they will follow the same format as 2014 qualifying process; they will have four rounds. FIFA will use their ranking in order to seed the nations in AFC. CAF, in the first stage, there will be home & away matches to reduce the teams to 36 and the next round will determine the top two groups to advance to the next round. And this continues till they have the winners to advance to the finals. In Europe, UEFA will have seven groups of six and two groups of five competing in the qualification process. CONMEBOL will have all teams play against each other, home & away and only the top four nations will qualify to the finals.
There will be five rounds between CONCACAF teams and winners will advance till the finals. OFC will have three rounds to choose the qualifying teams for the finals.
